The University of Washington School of Law equips students with the legal tools and hands-on experience to become practice-ready lawyers through doctrinal and experiential offerings. Its Clinical Program provides real-world legal experience, assisting clients and communities with real cases, transactions, and projects for academic credit supervised by experienced faculty. The School of Law seeks applications for a Temporary Clinical Fellowship in the Civil Rights and Justice Clinic. This is a 12-month position starting Fall 2025, for lawyers considering careers in civil rights, public interest litigation, or law school administration. The fellow will work in our year-long Civil Rights and Justice Clinic, focusing on issues of constitutional rights, policing, and social justice, representing clients harmed by police or public officials in civil rights actions under 42 U.S.C. 1983.
The clinic involves representing wrongfully convicted individuals, victims of police violence, and engaging in policy, research, and advocacy initiatives.
Responsibilities:
Represent clients in all phases of civil rights litigation, including pleadings, discovery, motions, appeals, trials, and mediation.
Supervise law students participating in clinic litigation.
Provide support for clinic courses, assist students with enrollment, case management tools, and inquiries.
Manage cases independently when needed.
Optionally pursue a scholarship agenda.
Minimum Qualifications:
Juris Doctorate (J.D.)
At least 9 months of legal experience, preferably in federal courts or litigation.
Ability to work independently and in teams, with strong communication skills.
Excellent legal research and writing skills.
Bar admission; WA state bar preferred, others accepted.
Ability to handle sensitive, traumatic cases involving serious crimes and violence, with a willingness to advocate despite graphic or violent content.
