Associate Attorney

Position: ASSOCIATE ATTORNEY

The Organization:

The Law Office of Oscar Mendoza is a small but growing private law office that provides immigration legal services to immigrants all over the United States, focusing primarily in Texas. It seeks to continue growing its operations and its representation of clients and to expand its success by retaining more clients and obtaining more positive outcomes for its clients.

It seeks to hire a full-time associate attorney who will represent individuals pursuing benefits or seeking relief under the Immigration and Nationality Act. This position is in Dallas, Texas and candidates that can commute to offices located in Dallas, Texas are preferred, and opportunities for remote work will be available.

The position will be responsible for representing clients in pre-application/investigative services, immigration legal services with USCIS, preparing them for interviews, and appealing negative decisions on affirmative immigration applications before the appropriate appellate division departments. Additionally, this position will also focus on assisting detained and released adults in bond and removal proceedings, as well as released families in removal proceedings.

The Position:

The Law Office of Oscar Mendoza is seeking an Associate Attorney to represent immigrants in affirmative applications, although opportunities to provide services in other immigration matters may be available. The Associate Attorney will also provide zealous representation to clients before the immigration court and Board of Immigration Appeals and seek to advance cutting-edge legal strategies, guided by the principle that all immigrants deserve high-quality representation in removal and bond proceedings.

Responsibilities and Duties:

Conduct thorough immigration screenings for consultees to assess for affirmative options, including explanation of benefits and risks of applying, processes, and costs and to ascertain eligibility for bond and/or immigration relief and to advise clients of their rights and available options while in proceedings.
Represent immigrants on a wide variety of immigration matters before USCIS, including but not limited to Family petitions (both within and without the U.S.); Humanitarian petitions, such as affirmative Asylum, U visa, VAWA; Naturalization; Renewals for DACA, TPS, Employment authorization documents, Waivers, etc.
Provide direct representation to a large caseload of individuals and families in immigration removal and bond proceedings before the Immigration Court (EOIR) and the Board of Immigration Appeals (BIA), in custody matters before Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and in credible/reasonable fear interviews and applications for affirmative relief before US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS);
Prepare and submit effective immigration application packets, legal briefs, and supporting documentation for clients.
Assume general administrative responsibilities, including detailed case management, supervision of a legal assistant, and timekeeping, to complete client casework on a prompt basis.
Be available to provide training/support to legal assistants.
Organize and maintain client files and data for reporting on a regular basis.

Qualifications:

J.D. from ABA certified law school or international equivalent.
A current bar membership in good standing. Barred in Texas preferred but not required.
At least one (1) year of immigration law experience is required, including in removal proceedings.
Fluent in Spanish and English;
Legal research and writing skills.
Ability to work in a demanding environment and manage time and resources.
Excellent organizational skills.
Collaborator; highly self-motivated, responsive and a good trouble-shooter.
Commitment to serving immigrants and sensitivity to the needs of low-income, culturally diverse clients.
Able to travel to other cities to provide representation at immigration office and cour locations.

Terms & Conditions:

Annual salary of $75,000 to $100,000, depending on experience.
Three weeks paid leave to start, annual CLE training and bar dues.

Pay: $75,000.00 – $100,000.00 per year
