The Georgia Department of Community Health (DCH) is one of Georgia’s four health agencies serving the state’s growing population of over 10 million people. The Commissioner’s Office is seeking a Legal Assistant to support the Senior Attorney. This is a part-time position working up to twenty hours per week.

Job Responsibilities

The Legal Assistant will support the Commissioner’s Designees and attorneys assigned to the Commissioner’s Office by assembling and organizing legal documents, writing reports, tracking cases and contract deadlines; calendaring hearing/decision dates; timely receiving, filing, and processing correspondence, pleadings, and appeals; obtaining, organizing, and ensuring the completeness of administrative records on appeal; drafting correspondence, maintaining decisions for the case repository; coordinating communications with litigants and counsel; processing and maintaining records of investigatory files maintained by the attorneys and other duties as assigned.

Essential Job Responsibilities include:

Exercising proficient computer skills using Microsoft Office, Laserfiche, and other programs.
Utilizing strong writing and editing skills.
Calendaring, organizing, and managing legal records and case files.
Efficiently scan, load and categorize/index legal documents.
Preparing correspondence and certificates of service for pleadings and decisions .
Coordinating scheduling on behalf of the Commissioner’s designees and attorneys assigned to the Commissioner’s office.
Timely mailing or otherwise distributing decisions and orders to litigants.
Assisting with drafting and editing legal documents.
Performing research utilizing Lexis Nexis and other resources.
Tracking cases and deadlines utilizing databases and agency systems.
Responding timely to requests via postal service, private delivery companies, email or phone
Providing general administrative support to the Commissioner’s Designees and attorneys assigned to the Commissioner’s office, including but not limited to organizing appellate hearings, reserving conference rooms, scheduling court reporters, drafting Notices of Hearing and Docketing, and coordinating technology resources as necessary.
Working cooperatively with colleagues throughout this and other state agencies, with appealing parties, and their counsel.
Drafting reports.
Maintaining an ability to work independently and collaboratively as needed in a high-paced environment.
Performing other duties as assigned,

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED AND Two years of experience in a legal setting using computer software OR Two years of experience in an office setting using computer software.

Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, especially Word
Strong Communication Skills
Strong Customer Service Skills
Strong keyboarding skills
Paralegal certificate preferred
Team player, self-starter, results driven
Experience in providing direct administrative support to attorneys
Willingness to learn and accept input from others

Current Georgia state government employees will be subject to SPB rule provisions. The position may be filled at a lower or higher position level.
