This is a
Labor and Employment Attorney
position reporting directly to the General Counsel or a supervising Attorney IV. The primary purpose of this role is to provide complex labor and employment legal services to clients. Work is performed under the direction of the General Counsel or a designated Assistant General Counsel IV, with review through conferences, document inspections, and results evaluation.
The responsibilities include:
Scheduling, assigning, monitoring, reviewing, mentoring, and evaluating staff work.
Conducting sophisticated legal research and preparing opinions on various issues.
Interpreting and applying legal principles and precedents to resolve complex legal issues.
Preparing position statements for agencies like EEOC, FCHR, OCR, among others.
Participating in collective bargaining and handling labor disputes such as grievances, arbitrations, and unfair labor practices.
Reviewing documents and providing opinions on their legal validity.
Investigating claims and complaints involving the Consolidated Government and recommending actions.
Preparing for and trying cases in state and federal courts, including depositions, pleadings, motions, discovery, and trial materials.
Drafting proposed legislation and advising on legal matters.
Representing the Office of General Counsel in hearings and appeals.
Attending meetings with City Council, boards, agencies, and clients.
Providing leadership by assigning responsibilities, taking corrective actions, and motivating employees.
Performing other duties as assigned.
Qualifications include:
Knowledge of judicial procedures, evidence rules, City Ordinances, and Charter provisions.
Ability to interpret and apply legal principles to complex issues.
Effective communication skills, both oral and written.
Experience in conducting research and preparing legal opinions.
Knowledge of municipal, county, state, and federal law related to city government.
Ability to try civil cases before courts and administrative bodies.
Legal research, analysis, and document preparation skills.
Leadership and staff evaluation abilities.
Effective relationship-building skills.
Minimum requirements:
Graduation from an accredited law school.
Florida law license.
At least 7 years of progressive experience in labor and employment law.
Experience in government legal practice is preferred.
Memberships or admissions to practice before courts may be required depending on the practice group.
