Overview

ATTORNEY III Jobs in Sacramento, CA at Department of Veterans Affairs

What we do:

At Gick Law, we provide responsive, experienced, and empathetic legal representation. We primarily represent people facing criminal or traffic charges in southwest Virginia, although we occasionally handle civil matters such as expungement.

How we work:

We value our clients as decent, hardworking people. They often come to us because they have made a mistake or a bad decision with serious consequences. Clients are often anxious or scared. It is very important to be able to remain calm, pleasant, and hopeful. We return phone calls and emails promptly. We explain to our clients how the sometimes frightening and complicated criminal justice system works. We work hard to get fair outcomes that allow clients to move on with their lives as much as possible. And we fight to minimize the collateral consequences to clients as well as their spouses and children.

What you will be doing as a Legal Assistant/Scheduler:

Our office is in downtown Roanoke City, Virginia. This is a busy firm: I am traveling almost every day to handle criminal and traffic matters in state courts. You will have your own office, computer, and mobile phone. We will communicate by email, text, and telephone often (and in person when I’m in the office). You will be calling court clerks, clients, and occasionally prosecutors. You will draft and tailor documents for faxing or mailing to the courts.

What your duties will be:

– Use MS Word to create and revise letters, motions, and other legal documents
– Handle scheduling of trials, review of prosecutor’s files, and client meetings
– General clerical support, including filing, photocopying, and faxing
– Make and answer phone calls with professionalism and excellent phone etiquette

What background is required to do this job:
– Previous experience in customer service, ideally as a legal assistant
– Computer literacy, including experience with Microsoft Word and Outlook (email and calendar)
– Excellent organizational skills with the ability to prioritize tasks and follow up
– Discretion to handle confidential client information

What you will get:

We offer competitive pay commensurate with your experience. This is a part-time position, Monday through Friday. The schedule is flexible. Tentatively, it will be 20 hours per week, but more hours are possible. On occasion, you could work remotely (e.g., from home).

How to apply:

Please submit your resume to [email protected]. Use the subject line “Legal assistant application”. In the body of the email, tell us why you would be a great fit for the job.

Qualified candidates will be contacted for an interview.
