Role Description The Associate / Senior Associate (3–5 PQE) is a hybrid role in Melbourne, VIC, handling a diverse caseload across the firm’s key practice areas, including disputes and litigation, insurance litigation, and media and defamation matters. Day-to-day responsibilities include managing files from inception to resolution, drafting pleadings, correspondence, and advices, briefing counsel, and representing clients in negotiations, mediations, and court appearances as appropriate. The role involves close collaboration with partners and colleagues to develop litigation strategies, assess risks, and deliver pragmatic, commercially-focused solutions. The Associate / Senior Associate will engage directly with clients, providing timely updates, managing expectations, and ensuring transparent communication consistent with the firm’s values. The position also includes contributing to knowledge sharing, mentoring junior team members where relevant, and supporting the ongoing development of the firm’s integrated digital workflows.
Qualifications
- Admitted to practice law in Australia with approximately 3–5 years post-qualification experience in litigation, insurance, commercial disputes, or media and defamation law.
- Strong skills in legal research, legal analysis, and drafting of pleadings, advices, and complex correspondence.
- Demonstrated experience in case management, court procedures, and dispute resolution processes such as negotiation and mediation.
- Comfort working with electronic litigation platforms, digital document management systems, and integrated legal technology tools.
- Ability to manage competing priorities, work autonomously, and collaborate effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a client-centric approach and sound professional judgment.
- Experience in any of the firm’s broader practice areas (e.g., employment law, class actions, professional liability, commercial litigation, or start-up advisory) is advantageous.
- Commitment to ethical practice, accountability, and continuous learning, with interest in innovative and progressive law firm models.
