Essential Job Functions:

The Judiciary Clerk is an entry-level clerical position that is responsible for processing and maintaining civil domestic cases by reviewing and determining the case type, using a computer to input the information, preparing, and issuing appropriate summonses, notices or writ(s) and calculating the fees for Prince George?s County Circuit Court. The incumbent will also be responsible for handling the collection, reviewing and docketing of case file documents prior to and following court hearings. Assisting the public and attorneys by providing information about the status of the cases and Clerk?s Office procedures. Performing cashier duties and any other functions related to the civil domestic division as needed.

Assists the public and attorneys at the front counter. Collects and assesses correct filing fees along with providing information related to civil domestic cases.

Maintains the case load by accurately, effectively, and efficiently using a personal keyboard to input entries into Civil Domestic cases. Verifies case numbers and parties on pleadings are correct while performing other duties as assigned.

Assists the public and attorneys with information regarding cases over the telephone. Answers questions in reference to different issues as it pertains to civil domestic cases.

Issues appropriate summonses, notices, or writs.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: High school diploma (or GED equivalent).

Experience: One (1) year of work experience, preferably in court operations or in the fields of criminal justice, parole and probation, legal or financial services.

Note:

A Bachelor?s Degree may substitute the required work experience.

A Paralegal/Associates Degree or 60 college credits may substitute the required work experience.

A Paralegal Certificate may substitute the required work experience.

Knowledge:

General office practices, procedures, and equipment.

Standard legal forms and documents used in the Judiciary.

Basic English and arithmetic to include, but not limited to, spelling, punctuation, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

Skill in:

Customer service and handling problems tactfully and patiently.

Typing on a personal computer.

Accuracy and attention to detail.

Ability to:

Use standard office and business equipment including, but not limited to, personal computers, word processing, spreadsheets, database software, copier, cash register, scanner, fax machine, etc.

Use and maintain numerical filing system to locates files, until all cases are completely scanned.

Communicate clearly, tactfully, and effectively with judges, the public, police agencies, attorneys, and other court officials and personnel, both verbally and in writing.

Understand and abide by departmental rules, regulations, and procedures.

Exercise tact, diplomacy, and impartiality in dealing with the public, law enforcement personnel, and attorneys.

Follow procedures, verbal and written instructions, and protocols for any given assignment.

Use proper grammar, punctuation, and spelling.

Exercise independent judgment in interpreting and applying appropriate policy, procedure, rule, law, and/or regulation to a situation.

Physical Requirements:

Sedentary work. Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met.

Equipment, Machinery and Tools:

Personal Computer to index pleadings and view entries to assist the public.

Cash Register to process filing fees.

Credit Card machine to process filing fees.

Calculator to add filing fees collected throughout the day to balance out the cash register.

Language Line Phone to assist non-English-speaking customers.

Software and Computer Skills:

Microsoft Office Suite, File and Serve, Odyssey and others as needed.
