The International Municipal Lawyers Association (IMLA) is seeking an attorney new to the practice of law who is interested in municipal law and willing to perform a diverse number of tasks to help advance IMLA’s mission and member-oriented services. The individual’s primary responsibilities will include:
Spearheading IMLA’s distance learning program, including the development of content relevant to the practice of municipal law for webinars and hosting the distance learning programs. Technical and administrative support is provided for this role and the attorney will be responsible for the overall supervision of those other individuals in their capacities in assisting with the distance learning events;
Responding to members’ requests for research services;
Drafting case summaries for IMLA’s biweekly e-news publication;
Helping draft amicus briefs including those before the Supreme Court;
Assistance with research related to corporate compliance matters for IMLA;
Traveling to and assisting with tasks associated with IMLA’s in person annual conference and mid-year Seminar; and
Generally assisting with other tasks related to the advancement of IMLA’s membership services mission.
The ideal candidate will possess a juris doctorate and have some basic knowledge of municipal law or one of the areas of practice within municipal law. The candidate should be independent and able to communicate effectively both in writing and orally and should be member service oriented. The candidate should have excellent writing and editing skills as well as fine attention to detail.
IMLA provides a supportive and collaborative working environment and there are opportunities to work in areas of interest to the individual within the general umbrella of municipal law.
IMLA is a non-profit, non-partisan professional organization consisting of over 2,500 members. The membership is comprised of local government entities, including cities, counties and subdivisions thereof, as represented by their chief legal officers, state municipal leagues, and individual attorneys. IMLA serves as an international clearinghouse of information and cooperation on municipal matters. IMLA’s mission is to advance responsible development of municipal law through education and legal advocacy.
Salary commensurate with experience and on par for similar small non-profit organizations and generous benefits offered including additional monetary incentives related to attorney’s work, medical, dental, and vision insurance, and participation in IMLA’s 403b retirement plan. Telework opportunities are available although the candidate should be able to come into the office in Rockville, MD on occasion.
