We are currently looking for a Full Time Assistant Public Defender to join our Chief Public Defender team located at the The Federal Building working 8:00 AM-5:00PM – Mo Tu We Th Fr.

Summary:

Responsibilities:

* Represent clients in criminal cases, including pre-trial, trial, and post-conviction proceedings

* Provide legal counsel and advice to juvenile clients and their families in cases involving delinquency, status offenses, and other related matters

* Conduct thorough interviews with clients to gather facts, explain legal processes, and advise on possible outcomes

* Prepare and file legal documents, motions, and briefs on behalf of clients

* Develop defense strategies, negotiate plea deals, and advocate for alternative sentencing where appropriate

* Maintain detailed case files and documentation, ensuring all legal deadlines are met

* Represent clients in court at all stages of the legal process, including arraignments, hearings, trials, and appeals

* Cross-examine witnesses, present evidence, and argue motions to suppress evidence or dismiss charges

* Ensure the rights of juvenile clients are protected, and that appropriate rehabilitation and support services are considered

* Work closely with social workers, investigators, and other staff to develop comprehensive defense strategies

* Communicate regularly with clients, keeping them informed of case developments and legal options

* Engage with community resources to support clients’ needs, including mental health services, substance abuse treatment, and educational support for juveniles

* Adhere to ethical standards of the legal profession and maintain client confidentiality

* Stay informed about changes in criminal law, juvenile law, and public defense practices

* Participate in training and professional development opportunities to enhance legal skills and knowledge

* Performs all other duties as assigned

Skills:
Essential:

* Must be familiar with the Microsoft Office Suite of products

Experience:
Essential:

* 2 years directly related experience

Education:
Essential:

* Doctorate Degree in directly related field

Essential:

* A juris doctorate from an accredited law school with a strong academic record

Credentials:
Essential:

* Chickasaw Bar Association

* Standard Driver’s License

* Pass general background check

* Oklahoma Bar Association

Working Conditions:
Essential:

* Sitting up to 50% of shift

* Use computer up to 75% of shift

* Sometimes lift and or carry up to 10 lbs

* Mix of office/non-office settings

* Court room

* Pass pre-employment drug test
