Assistant Public Defender
* Note: This is a Non-Civil Service county position.
This position is responsible for providing legal services to indigent clients.
Primary duties include representing indigent clients with criminal cases in Superior Court and Juvenile Court of Paulding County. The Paulding County Public Defender’s Office is looking for an attorney that is eager to help people in and out of the courtroom. With guidance from senior attorneys and help from support staff, this position gives you the opportunity to represent people accused of felonies and misdemeanors in Superior Court and gain immediate experience in arguing motions and trial.
You will also have the opportunity to work with our treatment service coordinator, and other members of the community, to help your clients find treatment and housing.
Eligibility for Benefits: You are eligible for health and dental benefits on the first of the month following one calendar month’s employment. Paulding County offers a comprehensive benefit package beyond the health, dental, and leave benefits noted above. Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
Graduation from an accredited school of law.
Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
Current membership in the State Bar of Georgia.
Special Requirements
Preferred Qualifications:
Appellate and brief writing a plus.
One to two years of criminal trial experience preferred.
Working knowledge of conducting legal research including researching precedents in cases, preparation and dissemination of complex documents, pleading compilation, orders, etc.
Knowledge of Juvenile Cases.
Bilingual a plus but not required.
