Assistant General Counsel, Office of General Counsel

The Office of General Counsel at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas seeks an Assistant General Counsel to provide legal advice and services to senior academic and administrative officers on litigation, compliance, and risk management matters.

Role of the Position

Under the direction of the Vice President and General Counsel, the Assistant General Counsel will:

Responsibilities

  • Manage a litigation caseload from inception to resolution and coordinate with outside counsel, preparing pleadings, memoranda, discovery, and deposition responses.
  • Provide oral and written reports, recommendations, and action plans to the General Counsel and university leadership.
  • Represent the university in trials, hearings, and before state, federal, and local agencies.
  • Advise on enforcement of faculty, staff, and student disciplinary policies, including hiring, tenure, and conduct matters.
  • Draft agreements, opinions, policies, and other legal documents in compliance with federal, state, and university regulations.
  • Identify and mitigate legal risks in employment and compliance matters, including FMLA, ADA, and HIPAA.
  • Interpret applicable laws, the Board of Regents’ Handbook, NSHE policies, and university bylaws.
  • Stay abreast of legislative, court, and regulatory developments affecting assigned areas.
  • Supervise attorneys or support staff as directed by the General Counsel.
  • Minimum Qualifications

    J.D. degree with at least five (5) years of litigation experience in state or federal courts; admitted to practice in Nevada. Demonstrated ability to provide expert legal advice independently and work collaboratively in a small legal office is required.

    Preferred Qualifications

    Seven (7) or more years of litigation experience; experience in higher education or a Nevada public agency; civil rights or employment law background; willingness to travel occasionally and work weekends or evenings.
