Job Overview

The Cherokee Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office has an opening for a county-paid Assistant District Attorney in the Bartow County office (Cartersville).

Responsibilities

  • Review reports submitted by law enforcement to determine whether further investigation is needed; approve or return cases for more work; research alternative crimes; read and research case law; determine if crimes alleged are supported by probable cause.
  • Draft accusations and indictments with charges supported by the evidence; evaluate and research potential defenses; negotiate pleas to dispose of cases; dismiss cases not prosecutable.
  • Develop trial strategy for each viable case; meet with witnesses and crime victims; answer victims’ questions; determine appropriate sentence recommendations; attend all assigned court calendars to take pleas, conduct hearings, and administer all other non‑trial matters; attend pre‑trial conferences with judges and defense attorneys.
  • Subpoena appropriate witnesses for motions and trials; research and argue all pre‑trial and post‑trial motions; file motions in the appropriate time frame; comply with discovery requirements and keep crime victim apprised of all key stages of a criminal case; try cases before juries and judges.

Other duties may be assigned from time to time.

Qualifications

  • Applicants should be of strong moral character and committed to enforcing the law with impartiality and a commitment to justice.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills are essential.
  • Applicants should be able to handle a large volume of work in a fast‑paced environment with the ability to shift focus often.
  • All applicants must be a member in good standing with the State Bar of Georgia and be admitted to practice before the Superior Courts, Court of Appeals, and Supreme Court or Georgia.
  • All candidates are subject to a background check. Applicants selected for hire will be subject to fingerprinting, a criminal history background check, a motor vehicle driver’s history check, and pre‑employment drug screening. Employment is contingent upon the completion and satisfactory results of each investigation.
