The Shawnee County District Attorney’s Office is seeking an ethical, committed, and highly capable attorney to serve as an Assistant District Attorney (ADA). This position is responsible for the prosecution of criminal cases on behalf of the State of Kansas, representing the interests of victims, the public, and the integrity of the criminal justice system. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong courtroom advocacy, sound legal judgment, and a dedication to justice and public safety.
Primary Responsibilities:
Review investigative reports and law enforcement referrals for charging decisions
Prepare and prosecute criminal cases at all stages, from initial appearance through trial and sentencing
Handle plea negotiations, motion practice, jury and bench trials, and post-conviction matters
Work closely with victims, law enforcement officers, witnesses, and court personnel
Maintain accurate case files and comply with discovery obligations and ethical standards
Participate in case staffing, pre-trial conferences, and ongoing legal training
Promote the mission and values of the District Attorney’s Office
Perform other duties as assigned by supervising attorneys or the District Attorney
Minimum Qualifications:
Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school
License to practice law in the State of Kansas, in good standing (or ability to obtain prior to start date)
Strong written and oral advocacy skills
Ability to work independently and manage a full caseload
Demonstrated commitment to professional ethics, prosecutorial discretion, and public service
Must pass a criminal background check and be eligible for access to law enforcement databases
Preferred Qualifications:
Prior experience in criminal prosecution or criminal defense
Familiarity with Kansas criminal statutes and rules of evidence and procedure
Trial experience (bench or jury) and/or prior courtroom litigation practice
Experience using e-filing systems, case management software, and Microsoft Office Suite
Work Schedule:
This is a full-time, exempt position. Office hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM and 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Occasional after-hours or weekend work may be required based on trial or case demands.
