The Law Department is seeking applicants for an Assistant Corporation Counsel position in its Appeals Division. The Appeals Division handles appeals from nearly all of the Law Department’s litigating divisions and prepares amicus briefs in cases involving the City’s interests. Our attorneys appear before federal and state appellate courts, briefing and arguing appeals across a broad spectrum of cases, including those raising administrative law and constitutional issues related to enforcement measures concerning illegal cannabis sales.
The division also handles routine litigation and complex appeals involving cutting-edge legal questions and public policy issues, providing attorneys a unique perspective on City governance and opportunities for top-tier appellate practice.
Working independently and collaboratively, you will brief and argue a significant number of appeals annually, engaging with supervisors, trial attorneys, client agencies, and executive staff.
Post-orientation, attorneys may choose to work from home under two programs: a limited, irregular remote work option, or a Citywide pilot program allowing two set days of remote work per week, subject to division approval and operational needs. In-person responsibilities, such as court appearances or client meetings, will take precedence on designated work-from-home days. Participants must designate a consistent remote work location.
This pilot is currently a citywide trial, not yet permanent.

Minimum Qualifications
We seek candidates committed to public service with excellent writing, research, and analytical skills. Candidates must have graduated from an ABA-accredited law school and be a member in good standing of the New York State Bar or in the process of admission.
Preferred Skills
Prior appellate experience, either through practice or clerkship, is preferred but not required.
