Position: Assistant City Attorney I (Prosecutor)
Join our team at the City of Wichita Department of Law! We are currently seeking a skilled attorney to fill the role of Municipal Court Prosecutor (Attorney I). This position offers an exciting opportunity to engage in professional legal work, leveraging your expertise and trial skills in tasks such as interviewing witnesses, preparing trial dockets, trying misdemeanor bench trials, and prosecuting criminal cases in Wichita Municipal Court.
This position may also occasionally handle appeals of municipal court cases to District Court.
As a member of our dynamic prosecution team, you will be responsible for the prosecution of a wide range of cases, including traffic violations, criminal charges, domestic violence cases, and environmental/housing offenses. Anticipated Starting Salary
$68,000 – $84,984 (based on experience and qualifications).
Days and Hours
Monday‑Friday, 8:00 am‑5:00 pm (additional time may be required depending on case load).
Responsibilities
- Develops and prosecutes police and traffic cases.
- Interviews complainants and witnesses, determines facts relative to the prosecution of cases in court, and issues complaints.
- Confers with and advises Police Officers and other City officials as to legal interpretation of City ordinances.
- Represents the City in prosecuting building, health, and zoning ordinance violations.
- Completion of work assignments may require the operation of a vehicle.
- Other related duties may be assigned as needed.
Requirements
- Working knowledge of the principles of criminal law, particularly as they relate to the prosecution of municipal ordinance violators.
- Ability to appear in‑person for municipal court proceedings according to criminal/traffic dockets as assigned.
- Working knowledge of municipal laws and ordinances.
- Working knowledge of municipal court methods and procedures and skill in the prosecution of cases heard in court.
- Ability to apply legal principles to determinations on individual cases and problems.
- Ability to perform self‑directed research and analysis as required for effective prosecution.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates, employees of other departments, representatives of other organizations, and the public.
- May require ability to acquire and maintain a valid Kansas driver’s license.
- An employee shall not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace.
Education and Licensure
- Graduation from an accredited school of law. Applicants must be currently licensed to practice law in the State of Kansas or have completed the July 2026 Kansas Bar Examination and be awaiting results.
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need of a sponsorship.
- Offers of employment are contingent upon obtaining a temporary permit to practice law in Kansas and successful passage of the Kansas Bar Examination.
Full‑time Employee Benefits
- Vacation – Most employees with less than five years employment earn 10 days of vacation per year. After five years, accrual rates increase at varying rates to varying maximums, depending on work schedule and/or union representation. Employees can accumulate and carry forward up to 240 hours each year.
- Holidays – There are eleven paid holidays. Employees also receive one personal holiday that is granted after the first six months of employment.
- Sick leave – Sick leave accrual begins at one‑half day per month. After five years, sick leave accruals are one work day per month. Employees can accumulate and carry forward all unused sick leave each year. Employees who use 24 hours (3 days) or less of sick leave in a calendar year earn a “Well Day.” An additional “Well Day” can be earned following a year of perfect attendance.
