GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The General Litigation Division (GLD) prosecutes and defends a variety of cases, with a focus on constitutional and civil rights litigation, employment litigation, and matters of public concern impacting Texans daily. You will work on cases ranging from individual civil rights claims to complex institutional reform litigation, class actions, and public policy litigation. AAG IV-Vs manage a diverse docket, guiding clients to resolutions or taking cases to trial as first chair attorneys.
They also work on larger teams handling complex and significant matters for the State.

ESSENTIAL POSITION FUNCTIONS
Represent state agencies and officials in defense of lawsuits involving civil rights, retaliation, employment, constitutionality of statutes, Americans with Disabilities Act, etc., in state and federal courts.
Represent the State’s interests in proceedings not handled by other civil litigation divisions, including lawsuits to vindicate Texas’s sovereign and legal rights.
Conduct investigations, legal research, and prepare complex legal documents such as motions, pleadings, briefs, and memoranda.
Prepare and try cases in state and federal courts defending state agencies and employees.
Provide legal advice and assistance to state agencies, analyze complex issues, develop evidence through depositions and discovery, and prepare appellate briefs.
Deliver excellent client service and collaborate effectively within a dynamic office environment.
Perform related duties as assigned, maintain relevant knowledge, attend work regularly, ensure confidentiality, and comply with policies and ethical standards.
Assistant Attorney General V:
Additional duties include
Performing as lead counsel in subject areas with moderately complex responsibilities.
Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.
J.D. from an accredited law school.
Four years of full-time experience in Civil Litigation or related fields.
Licensed and in good standing with the Texas State Bar, eligible to practice law in Texas.
Knowledge of relevant laws and legal principles.
Skills in multitasking, prioritization, communication, judgment, and professional collaboration.
Ability to respond to feedback, work in person at the designated location, and travel as needed.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Exceptional academic credentials.
Law Review or judicial clerkship experience.
Experience trying jury trials in state or federal court.
Four years’ litigation experience in civil rights, constitutional law, employment, education, or healthcare law.
