Assistant Attorney General – Child Support Services – Waterloo Jobs in Waterloo, IA at State of Iowa
Litigation Paralegal | Health Law:
Under supervision of firm attorneys, the Litigation Paralegal: assists with all aspects of litigation and performs a range of substantive case related duties connected with maintaining a robust medical malpractice defense practice in the Health Law Practice Group. The Litigation Paralegal prepares legal documents like subpoenas, notices of deposition, witness lists, answers, proposed orders, and the like. Drafts correspondence to health care providers and other counsel for attorney review. Compiles, analyzes and summarizes medical bills, lien amounts, insurance write-offs, and other data from a variety of sources. Responsible for managing discovery documents in an organized fashion, retrieval of same for attorney use in deposition and at trial, and for systematic production to documents to other parties. Facilitates review of pending lawsuits by expert witnesses. Coordinates efforts between attorneys, clients, outside legal counsel, opposing legal counsel, other parties and outside vendors.
Key Roles & Responsibilities:
Assists attorneys in all phases of discovery and motions practice.
Assists attorneys in preparation of depositions; schedules attorneys, expert witnesses, and interested parties; prepares and serves Notice(s) of Deposition; coordinates schedules with court reporters and videographers.
Prepares witness files by insuring all relevant documents are obtained and filed; ensures witnesses receive relevant documents to review prior to deposition.
Indexes and summarizes deposition transcripts.
Sets up and organizes documents, pleadings, and medical records received for new cases (electronic and paper copies); reviews and indexes medical records; prepares summaries and chronologies of medical records.
Maintains large document collections within firm-wide database; obtains and organizes medical records and medical bills, producing same to opposing counsel, and preparing exhibits for motions and other pleadings.
Prepares and coordinates service of subpoenas; research Registered Agents to ensure appropriate service.
Maintains practice group database to track subpoenas, experts, and liens.
Performs document reviews and prepares document productions, including Bates numbering.
Performs research on expert witnesses; utilizes defense database services; maintains expert witness database; receives and responds to requests pertaining to expert witnesses.
Performs research on prescriptions, various health conditions, and other issues as indicated; performs legal research; compiles, analyzes, and presents findings for attorney assessment.
Obtains information/documents from various courts, government agencies, libraries, and other outside resources.
Drafts standard procedural pleadings like subpoenas, deposition notices, answers, proposed orders, etc.; maintains correspondence and pleadings files.
Drafts and answers interrogatories, requests for production of documents, and requests for admissions.
Assists with trial preparation; maintains case calendars, case files, and trial/case notebooks.
E-filing pleadings and filing paper pleadings with courts lacking electronic filings, including mailing service copies (e.g., CM/ECF, eFileDC, MDEC).
Travel to local courthouses and other businesses as necessary for document reviews and productions.
Performs other tasks as assigned to facilitate the attorneys’ ability to effectively respond to the Firm’s and Clients’ needs.
Minimum Education/Certification:
BA/BS degree in a related legal field of study is required; Paralegal Certificate is strongly preferred. A combination of education and experience may be considered in lieu of education requirement.
Minimum Experience:
5+ years current civil litigation experience required with medical malpractice defense and/or personal injury litigation experience preferred
Special Skills and Knowledge:
Excellent interpersonal and communications skills are required to interact with staff and attorneys on a daily basis. Must have meticulous attention to detail and the ability to prioritize work effectively in order to manage multiple projects, deadlines, and initiatives simultaneously. Strong organizational, problem solving, and listening skills are required. Intermediate to advanced level skills using Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe, and legal software is essential. Must be flexible for the potential need for travel and overtime.
Salary Range:
$80,000 – $90,000 based on experience and credentials, however, the higher end of the salary range is reserved for exceptional circumstances.
