Description
:
This course involves students in developing and maintaining an annotated Criminal Code. Through a structured and supervised process, students will research Criminal Code provisions and create/update annotations. The course will provide students with an opportunity to learn about: the process of interpreting criminal offences and provisions relating to criminal procedure; the use of constitutional provisions and principles in the interpretation of offences and procedures;
the needs of the profession (both prosecution and defence) and the general public in regard to annotations; the role of policy (as articulated in case law and parliamentary documents) in the interpretation and application of criminal law; and the processes for ensuring accuracy and relevance of annotations and for keeping them up to date. Coursework will involve both individual and group work.

Requirements:
The Common Law Section is seeking candidates who are leaders in the legal profession. An LL.B., JD, or equivalent is required for this position. Membership in the Law Society of Ontario (or equivalent) in good standing is also required. The successful candidate will have significant experience in criminal law and in the purposes and processes of statutory annotation. Prior teaching experience will be considered an asset.
The Common Law Section reserves the right to select a candidate who does not fully meet each of these requirements, where the candidate’s selection would be beneficial to the program, the course, the students or for a related reason.

An acceptable level of education and/or experience could be viewed as being equivalent to the educational required and/or demonstrated experience.
