Description

:

This course covers general principles of criminal law; burdens of proof; the physical and mental elements of offences; select defences; basic elements of criminal procedure; and the impact of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms on both substantive and procedural issues. It also includes critical perspectives on the law and an examination of how Canadian criminal law can reinforce and perpetuate social inequalities.

In addition, as a small group course in the first-year program, additional time is allocated for teaching activities enabling students to develop legal writing and researchskills in the context of the substantive subject matter.

Requirements:

The Common Law Section is seeking candidates who are leaders in the legal profession. A LL.B. or J.D. from a Canadian law schoolor equivalent is required for this position. Membership in the Law Society of Ontario, or equivalent, in good standing is asset. The successful candidate will have significant experience in criminal law and procedureand also relevant experience in teaching legal reasoning, writing and research.

Prior teaching experience will be considered an asset.

The Common Law Section reserves the right to select a candidate who does not fully meet each of these requirements where the candidate’s selection would be beneficial to the program, the course, the students or for a related reason.

The candidate may be required to teach this course either online, in-person or hybrid mode at the discretion of the Faculty and in accordance with public health guidelines.

An acceptable level of education and/or experience could be viewed as being equivalent to the educational required and/or demonstrated experience.
