This course focuses on the skills the

modern

lawyer needs to advocate their client’s interests in non-litigation forums: negotiation, mediation, and arbitration.

In the course, students will be guided through client interviews and encouraged to consider multiple approaches and solutions to client situations, to choose among dispute resolution processes, to negotiate and mediate agreements and disputes, and to practice oral

advocacy

in a non-litigation process.

Requirements:

The Common Law Section is seeking candidates who are leaders in the legal profession. A LL.B. or J.D. from a Canadian law school or equivalent is required for this position. Membership in the Law Society of Ontario, or equivalent, in good standing is asset. The successful candidate will have significant practical experience in alternative dispute resolution and written and oral advocacy.

Prior teaching experience will be considered an asset.

This course is taught collaboratively and following a predetermined course content and design.

The Common Law Section reserves the right to select a candidate who does not fully meet each of these requirements, where the candidate’s selection would be beneficial to the program, the course, the students or for a related reason.

Additional Information and/or Comments:

This course will be in the intensive January term. The candidate must be available to teach the entire month.

An acceptable level of education and/or experience could be viewed as being equivalent to the educational required and/or demonstrated experience.
