The Coalition of California Welfare Rights Organizations (CCWRO) is a renowned legal services support center that provides consultation, technical assistance, co-counseling, litigation support, and advocate training regarding California and federal public benefits programs. CCWRO works with Qualified Legal Services Programs (QLSPs), advocates, and community partners throughout California to strengthen access to justice and protect the rights of low-income Californians.
The substantive areas CCWRO covers include CalWORKs, CalFresh, General Assistance, Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Cash Assistance Program for Immigrants (CAPI), Welfare-to-Work, In-Home Supportive Services, Unemployment Insurance, State Disability Insurance, and related public benefits programs.
CCWRO is searching for a highly qualified and motivated Legal Assistant. Under the supervision of the Executive Director, the Legal Assistant will support CCWRO’s legal, advocacy, training, and technical assistance work. This position provides an opportunity to work alongside experienced public benefits advocates and contributes to statewide efforts to improve access to critical public benefits programs.
The Legal Assistant will assist CCWRO attorneys and staff by supporting requests for technical assistance, organizing legal and program materials, assisting with trainings and meetings, maintaining records, supporting grant reporting activities, and performing administrative tasks necessary to advance CCWRO’s mission.
Responsibilities
The Legal Assistant will:
- Provide administrative and program support to CCWRO attorneys and staff.
- Assist with responding to requests for information and assistance from QLSPs, advocates, community partners, and individuals seeking public benefits information.
- Assist attorneys with preparation for technical assistance requests, trainings, meetings, and advocacy activities.
- Conduct basic research and gather information as assigned to support legal analysis and advocacy work.
- Organize, maintain, and update electronic files, records, and documents.
- Assist with preparation, proofreading, and formatting legal documents, training materials, publications, and written resources.
- Assist with coordinating meetings, trainings, webinars, and other CCWRO events.
- Attend meetings as requested and accurately document notes, action items, and follow-up tasks.
- Support litigation and administrative advocacy activities through document organization, record management, and other assigned tasks.
- Assist with CCWRO publications, practice materials, and resources provided to legal services providers and advocates.
- Assist with grant management activities, including gathering, organizing, and maintaining data for grant applications, reports, and organizational records.
- Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information and comply with applicable organizational and funder requirements.
- Perform general administrative duties and other tasks as assigned.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have:

- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively with attorneys, advocates, and administrative staff.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information professionally.
Relevant experience preferred, including:
- Prior law office experience.
- Prior legal assistant, paralegal, or administrative experience.
- Experience working in a nonprofit, legal services, or public interest setting.
- Experience organizing legal documents, preparing written materials, or supporting grant reporting.
- Knowledge of public benefits programs or legal terminology.
- Paralegal certificate or related education.
Spanish or other language proficiency is a plus.
CCWRO’s office is in Sacramento. Remote work is an option. One-year contract with the possibility of an extension. CCWRO will consider both full-time and part-time employment
