Job Description:

Provide legal advice and guidance to Senator Royce West, analyze legal/ethical/legislative issues, drafting legislation ensuring compliance with relevant laws, managing legal risks, and representing Senator West in legal matters, essentially acting as an in-house lawyer who advises on various operations and transactions while ensuring legal adherence across; requiring strong knowledge of relevant legal areas, excellent communication skills, and the ability to translate complex legal concepts into actionable advice for decision-making.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Position requires a self-starter with strong legal and analytical skills; demonstrated, effective written and oral communication skills; and the ability to meet critical deadlines, interact with people at various levels, maintain confidentiality inside and outside of the office, and work with others to maximize available resources.

Requirements:

Working knowledge of the Texas Legislature and legislative process is required. Applicant should have experience working in a legislative office.

Must be able to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment. Must be willing to work cooperatively with others.

Strong writing skills essential. Ability to communicate effectively. Proficient with most basic computer programs, including Outlook, Excel, and Word.

Must prepare speeches and other remarks for the senator and represent the office at events.

Must coordinate assigned programs and projects with other legislative and state agency staff, and with various public/private entities.

Qualifications:

Graduate of a four-year college or university.

Law degree.

Prior legislative experience; required.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills (writing samples required).

NOTE: This opening is in the Capitol office in Austin.
